Submarines and SONAR

Submarines are one of mankind’s greatest invention. To through this naval vessel, many have been able to venture deep into the ocean and study its depths. Its design was made to travel miles beneath the ocean. Other than for the use in studies, submarines have also been mainly used in warfare in which they have played significant roles during World War II.

Underneath the ocean, light does not penetrate that far. So submarines must navigate through the water virtually blind. Submarines are equipped with navigational charts and sophisticated navigational equipment. On the surface, submarines use global sophisticating systems but this does not work underwater. Underwater, submarines use inertial guidance systems that keep track of the ship’s motion. This system is aligned to the submarine’s SONAR, a sound navigation and ranging. An active SONAR emits pulses of sound waves that travel through the water, reflect off the target and back, computers then can quickly calculate the distance between the submarines and the target.
